Ruskin published two lectures under the title of Sesame and Lilies, an approach on the philosophy of separate spheres which, in short, claimed that women were best equipped for the private or domestic realm, while men were naturally suited to the active, aggressive and intellectual domains of public life, including commerce, government and the professions.

In 1864, John Ruskin delivered two lectures that comprised Sesame and Lilies in Manchester (Leighton and Surridge 301) to a “mixed-audience. .. of middle class men and women” (Millet 65). The astounding success of Sesame and Lilies spoke to the interests of the Victorians in the duties of gender, and the idea of separate spheres in which to separate and guide them.
I find exaggeration to persuade easier compared to other essays, such as writing a scientific report or stating one’s opinions and suggestion logically, because they require reality and most of them must be facts, which are hard in terms of writing for me. Of course I do not enjoy writing as I enjoy playing games, but I sometimes enjoy writing, expressing my attitude and personality through it.

Proust would then rework. He published several essays, the first of which appeared shortly after Ruskin’s death in 1900, in art and literary journals such as La Gazette des Beaux-Arts and La Renaissance Latine, as well as excerpts of his translations of The Bible of Amiens and Sesame and Lilies.
